Lacerda’s girlfriend, Amanda Varney, began yelling at officers. She was warned several times to leave the area but she refused. A friend of Varney’s walked over to where officers were and physically carried her across the street away from officers but Varney was kicking and screaming. These actions almost caused her and her friend to be struck by a car while walking across Broad Street. Once across the street, Varney continued yelling and causing a scene which attracted a crowd of onlookers. She was then placed under arrest and charged with disorderly conduct/breach of peace.
