| Comments: | Sex offenders have always lived in our communities; but it was not until passage of the community protection act of 1990 (which mandates sex offender registration) that law enforcement even knew where they were living. In many cases, law enforcement is not able to share that information with you. Citizen abuse of this information to threaten, intimidate or harass registered sex offenders will not be tolerated. Further, such abuse could potentially end law enforcement's ability to do community notifications. We believe the only person who wins if community notification ends is the sex offender, since sex offenders drive their power through secrecy. According to official documents Van Woert was found guilty by jury trial in Skagit County Superior Court on 03/11/2003 of one count of Burglary 2nd Degree with a special finding of With Sexual Motivation and one count of Indecent Exposure. He was sentenced to 43 to 120 months in prison. This conviction was the result of Van Woert entering a motel room that was being cleaned by female staff. The victim was cleaning the bathroom when she noticed movement in the room. She turned around to see Van Woert in the room standing near the entrance to the bathroom. His penis was exposed and he was masturbating. The victim ran out of the room and reported the incident to management and the police. Prior to the exposure incident Van Woert had made contact with the victim in an elevator and near her cleaning cart while she was cleaning other rooms. On 03/19/1996 Van Woert was found guilty by bench trial in Skagit County Superior Court of one count of Rape Second Degree. He was sentenced to 72 months in prison. This conviction was the result of Van Woert sexual assaulting the unknown adult female victim. The victim met Van Woert while riding in a bus. They went to a restaurant and drank alcohol, then purchased more alcohol and Van Woert asked the victim to go to a camp trailer with him. Once there they continued drinking. Van Woert attacked the victim by spraying her in the face with pepper spray. He then threw the victim down and then physically and sexually assaulted her. After sexually assaulting her Van Woert told the victim he wanted to marry her. The victim ran from the trailer and reported the sexual assault. Van Woert is on active supervision with the Washington State Department of Corrections, until 07/27/2014.
