Inmate name: Uvalde Maverick Gonzales
Charge description: A Fort Bend County jury took only 10 minutes to convict Uvalde Maverick Gonzales of Possession of Marijuana on December 2, 2015. The 32-year-old Needville man was arrested at the Fort Bend County Justice Center in April 2013 after protesting the Texas drug laws while displaying a live marijuana plant. According to Assistant District Attorney Adrianne Norman, Gonzales was championing the legalization of marijuana on April 19, 2013 in front of the Fort Bend County Justice Center with a cooler full of beer and a live marijuana plant. The defendant actively participated during his trial, stating he wanted his day in court to challenge the Texas marijuana laws. Asking the citizens of Fort Bend County to determine his guilt and potential punishment, the jury took only minutes to find Gonzales guilty. The jury then handed down the maximum punishment allowed 6 months in jail and a $2,000 fine. While some jurors were in favor of legalizing marijuana, they were highly offended by the defendants blatant disregard for the law, said Norman. District Attorney John Healey wryly noted that both the defendants protest and his case went up in smoke. Gonzales was tried in County Court at Law No. 3 before Presiding Judge Susan G. Lowery. Possession of Marijuana in this case is a Class B Misdemeanor punishable by up to 180 days in the county jail and/or a fine up to $2,000. The defendant was not probation eligible. Assistant District Attorneys Adrianne Norman and Lindsay Richards prosecuted the case. Attorney Michael Nassif was appointed to represent the defendant.
