The sources of public records

There are two main categories of sources of public records — the government and private-sector businesses.

The government sources include state, federal, municipal and county governments. These maintain and release records such as; marriages, divorces, births, deaths, court, criminal, licensing, taxes, voting, and census.

The second main source, private-sector businesses include; phone companies, mortgage brokers, retail stores, and media companies.
